The Power of Sound Sleep

The OtterBlog

What is Sound sleep?

Sound sleep refers to the moments of sleep when the body is particularly still. Throughout the night, the body enters different stages of sleep which are associated with more or less movement. Sound sleep refers to the sleep stages that are associated with less movement. Light sleep refers to the stages that are associated with more movement.

Why does Sound sleep matter?

Recent Jawbone UP research has found that more Sound sleep is associated with increased patience, optimism, focus and more.

A longitudinal study with over 1,400 UP community members found meaningful correlations between Sound sleep and several qualitative lifestyle metrics. UP wearers with more Sound sleep during the previous night were more likely to report feeling energetic, rested, productive, attractive, focused and optimistic the following day. For most of these factors, Sound sleep had a significant impact even when controlling for the band wearer's total sleep.

How do I get more Sound sleep?

To maximize your sleep, consider the following sleep habits, and keep watching your insight cards for new tips and recommendations:

  • Aim for the National Institutes of Health's recommended 7-8 hours of sleep every night.
  • Maintain a consistent bedtime and wake-up time, even on weekends, so the body's circadian rhythm keeps to a schedule.
  • Sleep in a cool, dark, quiet, comfortable bedroom. The ideal temperature is between 65 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit (18 - 22 degrees Celsius).
  • Minimize caffeine, alcohol and heavy meals close to bedtime.
